Sometimes bright lights are hard on the eyes and the mind, especially during a very long day. Reducing the intensity of light within a room can be quite relaxing, especially for someone who is stressing over work or current events. There are multiple ways to alter the intensity of the lighting in a home office, all of which are affordable, attractive, and easy to install.

Candle Sconces

Sconces are very elegant, classy sources of recessed lighting. Both traditional candles and flameless candles provide a gorgeous flicker of light. Traditional candles must be mounted with fire safety in mind. Do not place candle sconces close to fabrics, books, loose papers, or flammable chemicals. Wicked candles will also produce melted wax. Sconces should have guards in place to collect melted wax, preventing it from damaging the wall, furniture, or carpeting that is located underneath the fixture.

LED Lighting

LED lighting is incredibly attractive, especially when string lights are used. These twinkling lights are actually quite powerful, without being overwhelming. They can make an office feel quite magical especially when paired with sheer fabrics. Testing LEDs is important when using them with fabric; the user must ensure that the LEDs will not become too hot against the fabrics. This usually is not a problem, however. LED light strips could also be used above bookshelves, with the light being reflected off of the light colored walls and ceiling.

Three Way Lamps

With a three way lamp, it’s as easy as assembling the lamp straight out of the box, placing it on the desk, and plugging it up! Three way lamps provide three levels of lighting for the room, and are within close reach. Some also dim via touch, rather than with the use of a button or switch.

Installing Dimmers with Existing Lighting Fixtures

Installing a dimmer switch for an existing lighting fixture will be the most hands on solution. A dimmer switch can be used to alter the intensity of the main light source in the room. It replaces the traditional flip switch, and is used in conjunction with a dimming bulb.

Dimmed lighting is far more calming and relaxing than overpowering, bright light. While brighter light might be ideal for reading and writing during long shifts, it is not particularly necessary in a home office.
