PEOPLE whose best action moments happen in the dark will now be able to capture it all on video with the first action cam to have a night vision mode.

Panasonic today unveiled the HX-A1 action camera which, when paired with an infra-red torch, is able to capture video in total darkness.

Panasonic Australia senior product manager Doug Campbell said one of the most likely uses for night-vision mode was to capture the behaviour of nocturnal animals.

“When we started thinking scenarios for night vision, the first thing that came to mind is wildlife,” Mr Campbell said.

The HX-A1, which will be on shelves late June for $299, looks like a small torch and unlike some action cameras is waterproof to 1.5m, shockproof and dustproof without the need for an extra casing.

Panasonic’s action cam does not shoot 4K video, unlike the top-of-the-line unit from segment leader GoPro, but shoots Full HD 1080p video at 30 frames per second.

It can be paired to a smartphone with Wi-Fi and an optional battery extender gives it up to 2 hours 45 minutes of battery life.

Panasonic Australia senior product manager Doug Campbell said one of the most likely uses for night-vision mode was to capture the behaviour of nocturnal animals.

Panasonic also unveiled the Lumix DMC-G7, a compact system camera with a 4K burst mode designed for capturing action.

In 4K pre-burst mode, when you hit the shutter button the camera captures 30 frames per second before and after the shutter burst so that you’ve got a better chance of not missing the right moment.

4K burst mode lets you hold your finger on the shutter button for up to 30 minutes, shooting 30 frames per second the entire time.

The DMC-G7 will also be available in late June, with prices starting at $899 for body only and ranging up to $1499 with a 14-140mm lens kit.
