iOS 11, macOS High Sierra, watchOS 4, tvOS 11 Release Dates Announced: Compatible Devices, How to Install, Features, and More

Apple’s grand event culminated with the launch of the iPhone X smartphone bringing in a new bezel-less display, Face ID, and many other new features. Alongside, the company also launched the Apple Watch Series 3, Apple TV 4K, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus as well. With respect to software, release dates for iOS 11, macOS High Sierra, tvOS, and watchOS 4 were also unveiled. iOS 11 is to bring huge changes with a new interface, Siri improvements, ARKit, new gestures, and much more.

iOS 11 release date, compatible devices, and features

iOS 11 will be released to all compatible smartphones on September 19. It will be available out-of-the-box on the new iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus. Other phones that will get iOS 11 include iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus. The 5th generation (2017) iPad, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 4, all Air models, all Pro Models, and the iPod Touch 6th generation (2015) will receive the update as well.

On September 19, you can check for an update by heading to Settings -> General -> Software Update. For those who cannot wait, Apple has just released a Gold Master (GM) build for iOS 11 for developers and public beta testers, and you can install that right away by signing up for the Apple Beta Program.

 

New features on iOS 11 include Siri’s new translation feature, the animated emojis for iPhone X, a redesigned Control Centre, peer-to-peer Apple Pay, portrait lightning on iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X (in beta), front facing portrait mode for iPhone X, improvements in screenshot capturing, and much more.

The big update for Mac devices is arriving on September 25, and it will run on all machines that run on macOS Sierra. The update is free to download, and will arrive on the Mac App Store a week after the iOS 11 update. The latest macOS High Sierra update brings the new Apple File System (APFS), external GPU and VR support, and High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC) support. There’s also improvements made to the Photos app, FaceTime, Notes, Mail, and iCloud. Safari browser gets speed enhancements, a new privacy feature, and the ability to prevent auto play of videos. Siri also gets a more natural tone, and Spotlight now gives away flight information as well. At WWDC 2017, Apple only announced the arrival of Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV, and a new TV app. At that time, CEO Time Cook did promise more updates on tvOS later in the year. Staying true to that promise, Apple has announced availability of tvOS 11 on September 19, alongside watchOS 4 and iOS 11. The update will arrive via OTA, or you can even install it as a separate image file for restoration using iTunes.

The biggest change with tvOS 11 is the ability to support 4K on TV; however it brings under the hood stability improvements as well. The update is compatible with Apple TV (4th generation) users as well.

watchOS 4 release date, compatible devices, features

Alongside the launch of the Apple Watch Series 3 which brings the much awaited cellular support, the company also announced the arrival of watchOS 4 on September 19 for all Apple Watch models. When it releases, watchOS 4 can be found in the Apple Watch app under General > Software Update. The watchOS 4 comes with new watch faces, Siri improvements, and new heart monitoring features.
