Being able to understand the lyrics of a favourite band or singer, or meet and communicate with people from all over the world, or become someone “new”, were all themes captured by some of the winning vlog entries in a successful competition aimed at young Brazilians keen to study English.

The successful competition to capture what learning and speaking English means to young Brazilians has now closed and five lucky winners of the English is GREAT: Speak to the World campaign have been revealed.

The video competition, which garnered almost 2,000 entries, asked entrants to produce a one-minute video explaining what English means to them and why #EnglishisGREAT.
The entries offered a great insight into what motivates students of English, with getting to know English culture and having a cup of tea at 5 o’clock often mentioned by the 30 finalists.

The competition, organised by English UK and sponsored by the UK’s GREAT campaign, will enable the five winners to receive a two-week scholarship (including flights, tuition, accommodation and activities) in partnership with English UK North, London, South West, Wales and Northern Ireland.

“We received thousands of vlogs and we were really impressed by the quality of the submitted materials,” said English UK when unveiling the winners, who will promote their experiences on social media and become ambassadors for English UK.

The ELT member organisation also teamed up with BMI Media to offer “travelling classrooms” teaching English at four of Salao do Estudante study abroad fairs in Brazil while encouraging students to apply and win.
