AUSTRALIAN actor Tammin Sursokhas opened up about how she struggled with her weight as a teen.

The 33-year-old actor, who is currently based in LA, took to Instagram today to share a collage of photos of herself from her younger years to acknowledge that many people suffer from a lack of “self love”.

The post, which went out to her 877,000 Instagram followers reads:

“So I was going through some pictures from my family home and I came across these. It actually took me back to a place of painful memories. I remember the lack of self love and the lack of compassion I had for myself.

“I think it’s important to speak about this around the holidays – especially when all we are seeing is everyone’s ‘highlight’ reel, the filters, the perfect families, the perfect bodies – and I know there are many people out there who are struggling, who don’t feel like they are enough, who have no hope. I PROMISE you, you can change your life. You can get out of a painful situation.

“It takes one positive step in the right direction. Just one step. This is not about weight, it’s about positive change from whatever negative situation you find yourself in. This is coming from me, this was my story, a little girl close to 200 pounds (90kg), who woke up one day and decided enough was enough. I love you all and I truly believe in every one of you. #thisisbeautiful.”

The hashtag #thisisbeautiful refers to a campaign Sursok spearheaded on her blog, Bottle+Heels, which aims to promote positive body image.

Sursok has been open about her weight issues in the past and has said that she was bullied as a teenager. In October she told New Idea that at the age of 14 she weighed 95kg.

“I lost all the weight because I was sick of being teased – I was bullied a lot.”

Earlier this year she shared another throwback picture on Instagram with the caption: “I definitely wasn’t the popular girl but it didn’t define me. You can be ANYTHING you want to be in your life. It’s your choice which path you take.

“Don’t let other people’s words give you your self worth. You are beautiful. I was beautiful. It just took me a long time to love myself.”
